We have all been there! There is an awkward student who is determined to wind you up. They want an argument and you are getting angry. Or the one who says, 'I'm not doing it and you can't make me!' Don't respond! Never argue! But you can't just ignore it. Here is a good idea, which will allow you to move on with the lesson and usually closes the awkward student down. Say something like: 'Maybe'. Or 'You might have a point there,' or even 'You may well be right,' Then, move on with the lesson.

I find that this confuses the student slightly and they shut up, as you appear to have conceded they may have a point, while you haven't conceded at all as you just move on with the lesson. So remember, next time you feel like arguing the toss, smile and say, 'Mmm, maybe...Now, let's get back to the lesson.'

Or adopt the language of choice.... 'I'm asking you to make the right choice about this. I can't make you do it, but you know it would be the right thing for you to do.' And so on.
