Debating Cards

Print out the cards on both sides, except for the last 3 pages, and laminate. Depending on the size of the class, you may need to print more.
Introduce the vocabulary.
Set the scene for the debate.
Hand out the cards so that the students have at least 2 agreeing cards and 2 disagreeing cards.
If they have low levels, then give them at least 1 opinion card each.
Once the debate starts, they must throw down their cards when agreeing or disagreeing with the others but they must follow up by saying something to justify using the expression, (e.g. Never in a million years … that just wouldn’t be fair).
Set a time limit for the debate and students that get rid of all their cards receive an extra vote when it comes time to take a decision on the arguement.
The last 2 pages include a break-down of the expressions and how they are used correctly.

The present printable, downloadable handout is best suited for business/professional students, high school students and adults at Intermediate (B1), Upper-intermediate (B2) and Advanced (C1) level. It is great for teaching Figures of speech, metaphors, metonyms in English, and is useful for improving your groups' Speaking skills. It is focused on the topic and words of Debate.
