This cloze activity tells the story of American (& Chinese) writer Pearl S. Buck when students complete the missing verbs. Students must choose a verb that makes sense and write it in the correct tense and aspect. The worksheet purposefully does not provide a word bank so students can choose any verb that makes sense. Students must demonstrate reading comprehension to complete this activity. I cut the worksheet into paragraphs and created groups of 2-4 students. I gave each group one paragraph to complete at a time, promoting a bit of friendly competition for groups to complete as many paragraphs as they could. When a group completed a paragraph, they called me over to check it, taped it up on the board, then received the next paragraph to work on. At the end, students walked around the room and were able to compare the verbs that they wrote in with the ones that other students chose.
