Each full time teacher works approximately 24 teaching hours per week, with around 5-10 extra hours for class preparation. Teachers are also expected to be involved with school events for example by helping decorate and/or organize.
All teachers at Active English School have private, semi-private and group classes. Group classes range from 3 to 10 students. There are a wide variety of students attending Active English School: they range from 3 years old to around 70, and about two thirds of these students attend local schools.
The students bring an amazing energy to the school, and most of them are very motivated towards learning English. Compared to Western culture, Japanese students spend a lot more time at school and studying, and in general they are much more studious.
In addition, the conversation teacher is required to be a substitute for Assistant Language Teachers if an ALT is absent, and visit the public school/s in Shiojiri on those particular days. Please refer to the ALT job description below for more information.
Active Personnel (Assistant Language Teacher)
AP provides Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) to the Japanese public school system.
The job of an ALT involves assisting teachers with lessons, planning activities according to the learning level of students, and suggesting new and creative ways to improve language learning at school. The teacher might take full responsibility in classes in some elementary schools.
Teachers work 8 hours a day (8:30-16:30) five days a week from Monday to Friday. However working hours may change in case of meetings, classes or events, and there may arise the occasional Saturday or Sunday in which the staff member is needed to work due to special weekend events. Teachers will have one base school which is a junior high school, and 2-3 additional elementary schools. However there is one position that has an elementary base school and about 7 other elementary schools.
Holidays follow the Active English School's calendar. (Spring, Golden Week holidays, Summer, and Winter vacations) However, teachers may be required to attend meetings, training or other events on some weekends or holidays.
In addition to the work above, the teacher is required to teach at least four hours of conversation classes a week as a part-time teacher at AES. AES pays extra for all classes taught by the employee, who may be asked or requested to teach additional lessons if circumstances dictate.
