Summary of responsibilities:
The role of TEFL teacher is to deliver English lessons to classes containing up to 12 children of a similar ability on our Varsity International Residential Language School.
Lessons are in both the morning and afternoon, so you will teach 6 hours of lessons per day (3 hours in the morning to one group and 3 hours in the afternoon to a different group). Our school is unique as the international students benefit from full integration with British children during activity sessions – we call the UK children ‘Camp Buddies’. You will facilitate a 45 minute ‘Buddy Task’ as part of the 3 hours of teaching which is a team building task for the international children to complete alongside a selection of the Camp Buddies.
Planning and Preparation
You will complete your own lesson plans in accordance with the lesson structure set out by Varsity International and in relation to the syllabus. We provide a bank of lesson plans and resources however we expect you to use your wealth of experience, plus tried and tested lessons, that you can adapt for the students at Varsity International. You will need to provide a copy of each resource given out in class to ensure it is clear exactly what has been covered in each lesson, as well as to create a resource archive that can be used by other Teachers (in turn you too will be able to draw on other teacher’s ideas and resources). You will record all the above planning in the manner directed so the Academic Manager can check through once/twice weekly to make sure the goals and standards are being met.
Ensuring children are having a great time, are fit, healthy, sleeping well, eating well and achieving academically is a top priority for all staff. We take a proactive approach to our responsibilities regarding this, building relationships with each child to understand how they are feeling on any given day – you will do this within your lessons and feedback to your line manager regarding any student you have concerns about. As part of your shift, you will take a role supervising students at meal times and break times.
Take a role in the assessment of children English ability on arrival. Keep accurate records of attendance, incidents, accidents and maintain an open line of communication to your manager regarding the children on camp.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Deliver engaging English lessons for classes of up to 12 students aged between 8 and 14 in ability level groups from beginner to advanced.
Work to integrate UK children and international students as part of a daily ‘Buddy Task’.
Ensure all policies and procedures on camp are adhered to by yourself and the students in your care, including health and safety, and safeguarding procedures.
Take a pastoral role welcoming new students onto camp and into your classes and feeding back any concerns regarding the child’s experience or wellbeing.
Monitor student progress and complete a brief student assessment form at the end of each week to ensure the smooth transition of students from one week to another. This is especially important for students who have a change of Teacher from one week to another.
Complete or contribute to a Final Report for the students you have taught.
At all times behave in a manner that reflects the expectations of Varsity International.
Show the required energy, enthusiasm and professionalism for the duration of your contract, acting as an ambassador for Varsity International and behaving as a suitable role model for students.
50 – hour teaching week – 2 x 5 hour shifts Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat.
5 – 10 hour 6th day on either Friday or Sunday to assist with excursions, airport transfers and to conduct assessments of students.
Staff are expected to attend the Training Day regardless of when their contractual term begins with Varsity International. Exceptions to this may be made in extreme circumstances.
