This a PowerPoint to use with SS to introduce/expand on the nature of syllables in words. 
T to introduce the idea with an example before.
I used this PP with comparatives to introduce why we use ER with some adjectives and some do not change depending on their syllables.

Use this presentation to teach about the six types of syllabes: Closed, open, magic e, r controlled, vowel team and consonante plus -le, so students can distinguish them.

Basic worksheet for teaching R Controlled Syllables. It is designed to give a basic understanding. It contains the five "vowel+r" syllables. Because they are easy to learn, I have kept them simple.

R- Controlled Syllable

Syllable division rules show us how to break up a multi-syllable word into its syllable parts. There are six main syllable division “rules” to guide us.


Knowledge of syllable types and syllable division rules is an essential skill for reading accurately and fluently.  It provides a strategy for breaking words into manageable parts and correctly decoding them.


When readers can recognize syllable types, they have a way to determine if a vowel has a long, short, diphthong, r-controlled, or consonant-le sound.  They can also draw on this knowledge to find correct spellings.


It is crucial that students can distinguish the sound of a syllable within a word and be able to manipulate that sound.

Names; Open Syllable, Closed Syllable, Silent E Syllable, R Controlled Syllable, Vowel Team Syllable, and Consonant- le Syllable. Some words are listed for each syllable type. Explanation of the syllable types was also added.

It develops the idea of using long adjectives as comparatives.

The 2nd slide has been left blank for you to recap what you have taught your students about using short adjectives as comparatives, before moving through the activities using long adjectives.

A presentation covering the names of various medical specialists, with syllable breakdowns of each word. These are not easy words, but good practice all the same.

This is a presentation about body parts (it assumes SS have done the main body parts= head, neck, arm, leg etc)



SS can guess the words and the spellings.

To form the comparative, we add the suffix ‑er to the adjective or preceded the adjective with the word more. To decide which system to use for adjectives, we followed rules having to do with the number of syllables in the adjective.

Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
