Viking is the main name given to members of the Nordic peoples originating in Scandinavia, famous for their invasions and looting in Europe. Depending on the context and interpretation of the author, the name may be used to refer to raiders of this origin or to their countries of origin. Metonymy has led to the name still being used colloquially today to refer to Scandinavian countries.
