Practice The Present Perfect in Scenes From TV Shows

I turned this short animation into a dubbing game with 7 gapfill questions. Here's how you can use it in class:

1. Show the video lesson to the students. For each gapfill popup, they should guess what the wildebeests are saying, and suggest exactly one word to fill in the gap (5 out of 7 gaps a basic verb in either present simple, present continuous or past simple form). If the students have trouble guessing the right word, just give them clues, ask them helpful questions so they can figure it out.

2. Follow up: watch the video again on YouTube (you can find the original link below this description). Put students in pairs. Stop the video at each talking point and let them create their own unique dialog. Then continue playing and stop again at the next talking point. Students continue writing their dialog. 
3. Go around and make sure to correct what the pairs are writing.
4. Get the pairs to practice their dialog. 
5. Finally, ask for volunteers to dub the movie live while you're playing the video.
6. For homework you can either ask students to expand the dialog a little bit, and submit it in writing. Or you can ask them to write it up as a fable (an animal story).

Harry Potter - Past Simple

This video quiz was created with the Autoquiz creator ("Create a quiz in 1 click"). I took a video with a human-created subtitle, chose the topic of 'Passive in all tenses' and generated a quiz. Then I manually added some active voice questions alongside the machine-generated passive ones using the subtitle box in the editor. I've also inserted the infinitives in brackets by hand.

The objective of the lesson is to train students in the use of passive in the past simple tense through 15 questions (gapfill, multiple choice, correct the wrong word), including one item in the passive infinitive ("to be confused"). Students have to decide if the infinitive in brackets should be in the active or passive form.

I've delayed popping up each of the fifteen questions with a few seconds to let students' auditory memory fade and make them rely on their knowledge of grammar, rather than their ears.

Students work with the past simple form of basic action verbs to narrate the events of this short thriller. In this ESL video lesson there are both regular and irregular verbs in the questions. I used a variety of task types to keep up students' attention. 

I recommend this quiz for intermediate (B1) level ESL learners who started learning the past simple tense of irregular verbs. Some of the action verbs come back again and again with different usage, e.g. knock off, knock down, knock over, knock on the door. 

I think you can use this lesson with pre-intermediate (A2) students, too, because the meaning of the vocab items that are above A2 level can be easily inferred from the video, so they will likely not cause a problem for A2 level learners. If you wish, though, you can replace some of the more difficult verbs with simpler ones by editing this lesson using the Copy & edit button.

There are a few discussion questions attached to follow up the quiz. Plus, there is a vocab list of all the ESL action verbs and their past tenses.
