Japanese Earthquake

A 10-15 minute warm-up vocab matching worksheet to help Japanese students explain Japanese festivals in English.  

First match the pictures to the festival names, next match to their descriptions, adding the missing vocab from the box above.

Japanese Festivals

PREPARATION:

This activity requires you to make a die or cards to select from the following attributes;

weight: heavy/light

size: small/big

age: young/old

strenght: strong/weak

speed: fast/slow

height: tall/short



The character cards also need to be cut up.



ACTIVITY:

The idea is to separate students into two teams or put them in a competition bracket.  One person selects the attribute, for example, heavy, and the competing students select blindly from the character cards.  The non-participating students ask the question selected, "Who is heavier, A or B?"  The two participating students reply, "A is heavier than B."  



Note: The characters are mostly recognizable to about 3rd grade elementary students and up

Comparing Japanese Characters

This warm-up "find someone who" activity is designed to help Japanese students of any level talk about their winter vacation with appropriate English vocabulary. It's for the first class after their winter vacation.



First, match the vocabulary to the pictures, then walk around the class (or interview their partner) asking "Did you verb?" questions. 

Japanese New Year

This is a reading article that explains some common Japanese New Year traditions.  It corresponds with the Touchstone 2, Unit 4, page 40 textbook.  It can used as a comprehensive reading lesson is you add some questions after reading the article.

Japanese New Year Traditions

This short reading article is about some of Japan's cultural passages.  It corresponds with the Interchange 3, Unit 11, page 42 lesson.  It can be used as a speaking task.  Let the students tell about the rite in their own words.  And it can be a comprehensive reading exercise if you have a few questions after the reading.

Japanese Rites of Passage

Many Japanese video games, movies, comics, and TV shows are popular in Western culture. However, sometimes the names of the characters in these media change when they go abroad! 



This worksheet challenges students to match nine characters' original Japanese names (written in romaji) to the names they are known by in English-speaking countries. It also provides a good opportunity to discuss some root words and portmanteaus (squirt + turtle = squirtle).

Start the lesson with visual aids: Have students google the words and explain the topic regarding Japanese culture. 



Next, students watch a YouTube video and answer listening comprehension questions, complete a vocabulary matching exercise, discuss some things about Japan, Japanese culture, and world culture and finish with a listening exercise.

Telling a Story: Japanese Culture

A short worksheet to get to know students. Ideal for the start of the school year when you don't know anything about them. 



There is some Japanese included for words students might not be familiar with but you can easily customise it depending on your students level.



This activity shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes.

Who are you? English-Japanese

This worksheet introduces vocabulary related to trains to Japanese esl students.  The second part of the worksheet is a discussion prompt.  This could be easily adapted for students outside of Japan.

Students will learn an infinitive form of a verb, and when to use them.

I divided it into 3 parts, so students will learn 10 sentences at a time, which is not too much to handle for them.

After introducing the sentences and translations, I do a card matching activity using my other worksheet. 

I let students cut that worksheet paper into small cards and enjoy matching with a partner or in a group.
