Modals of Deduction Worksheet

One person is the doctor, the other is the patient. The patient choses an illness in their head. The doctor has to guess the illness based on the patient's symptoms using modal verbs of deduction. Once the doctor has identified the likely illness, the doctor might provide advice about how the patient can cure their illness or reduce their symptoms.

A nice long worksheet to get them practicing those modal verbs of deduction. Not very exciting but it is pretty clear and gives the students plenty of opportunities to practice saying or writing this structure. The answers are on the back.

Filling the gaps 

This worksheet is designed to provide students with enough practice so as to learn the use of modals, modals of deduction (present and past), gerund and infinitives. The students are provided with three options for each blank (MCQ). I hope it is useful.

This worksheet helps students revise the use of  modal verbs: can't / must / be able to. There are three tasks. Students write  deductions in the present or in the past;  moreover, they complete some sentences using the most suitable tense and form of "to be able to".

Modals - can't / must / be able to

This worksheet can be use to review modal verbs, specially perfect modals. It includes the key and contains three exercises: in the first one students change the given sentece into the past, while in the second one they have to complete the gaps with a perfect modal verb. In the last exercise students make their own deductions in the past (this exercise can have more than one correct answer, the ones given in the key is just one of the options)
