Modals - What can these animals do? What can't they do?

This activity focuses on the /eə/ diphthong sound and helps students to identify the various spelling of /eə/, namely -air	-ear –are –ere. It is indended as an in-class activity because, as the name implies, students need to run & write :)

A good woksheet to introduce or practice farm animals with kids. Students must complete the gaps, first with the name of the animal they hear, and then with the sound they produce.

Old macdonald´s song

This is a card game that enables to learn the names of the animals of the farm and their calls (sounds + verbs). It can be used to introduce the present simple as well as the vocabulary of the book by Julia Donaldson.

What the Ladybird Heard animals' calls

This worksheet is a good way to practice reading the words with the same sounds but which are differently written. It also helps students to practice word order in sentences and questions. It trains the intonation of English sentences, too. My students like such exercises very much.

This is a worksheet to present and practice the main different plural forms (-s, -es, irregular) and their pronunciation. Students write the plurals, categorise them according to the sound they make and try to think of some more of their own.



Tips

You may wish to brainstorm animal vocabulary as a lead into the worksheet.



Don't worry if you struggle to hear the difference between the /s/ and /z/ sounds. Sometimes it can be quite subtle. 



For your own reference, words ending with a voiced consonant (b, d, g, j, l m, n, ng, r, v, r, y, z) take a /z/ sound and words ending with an unvoiced consonants (k, p, s, t) take a /s/ sound.
