A reading comprehension, with exercises - match-up word study, answer the questions and correct the errors. My neighbour keeps sending me jokes and I keep meaning to turn them into RCs, so I have done it with this one! 

The Dog and the Lion: a fable. 

This is a reading comprehension activity. It consists of four different exercises. Students fill in the gaps in the text, answer the questions to it, match the words with their definitions. Key is given.

5 exercises: A fill in the gaps exercise to complete the famous story of the Hare and the Tortoise using the verbs in the simple past.

Exercise 1 - Complete the story with the verbs in the simple past;
Exercise 2 - answer the questions about the story;
Exercise 3 - Read a paragraph about Tom's breakfast;
Exercise 4 - Rewrite the paragraph using the simple past;
Exercise 5 - Answer the questions about the paragraph.

The Hare and the Tortoise - 5 exercises

This is an adapted version of a short story 'The Mouse' by Saki. I have included a link to the original. They read it and answer the questions. Key included. It is an example of a tale with a twist - a surprising ending. More advanced students could read the original and compare the stories. 

RC: The Strange Man on the Train

Another folk tale (this one is Tibetan) for INTERMEDIATE students. Students must read the tale and answer seven reading comprehension questions.

Students are also asked to choose ADJECTIVES to describe the tiger and the frog and explain the reasons for their choices.



Very good reading activity that can lead into a discussion about personality adjectives.

Reading: The Tiger and the Frog: Intermediate

A fable or moral tale. They read the story then do the true or false section and answer the questions. They choose the morals they agree with. I love teaching English through moral tales, great fun. 

A fable: The Devil and the Donkey

Pupils have to write colours, numbers, school objects, parts of the body, members of the family, weather under the right column. It can be used to make a general revision of vocabulary or just to have fun. When they finish doing the exercise you can divide the classroom in two groups. One group can write sentences and the other group can write questions to find out the answers

This is a good exercise to revise vocabulary in a funny way. Pupils have to write the words under the right column. They have to read, choose and write in the right place. You can revise, weather, school objects,etc. After they do this activity they can write sentences using the vocabulary or just ask and answer questions
