This handout is useful for elementary students and was design to help them to identify antonyms, which are words that have different or opposite meanings. Handouts give your audience something to take away from your presentation, to review later.

Synonyms and antonyms

Basic, no-frills WS:) Commonly used adjectives defined by their antonyms - may be used as a review or a warm up (individually or in small group). Depending on the students' level you may turn it into a race or allow the use of dictionaries.

Adjectives by antonyms

A ws that provides an opportunity for students to work on antonyms. They pick one of the four words in each line and write the antonym of the word and also state the word class.

Working with Antonyms

In this worksheet the student will find 84 written words. He will have to make 42 pairs of antonyms.Then there are little boxes where he/she must write the pairs he made.

This exercise gives the chance to the student to revise vocabulary, learn what the antonyms are and also he can later use them to make some sentences at home for further practice.

Tell to your student to use a dictionary if he/she finds unknown words. In this way he can practice using a dictionary and learn how to work with no help.

It is a worksheet that you can also use it during your lesson if you have 15 minutes left and you want an activity to fillup your time.

A short story where the students must change the highlighted words to either synonyms or antonyms depending on the highlighted colour. This teaches students to think about other words when they are writing or talking so as not to repeat the same words.

Learners taking the B2 Upper-intermediate exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.</li><li>Interact with fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without difficulty for either party.</li><li>Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain an opinion on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.</li><li>Main grammar points to know: perfect tenses, mixed conditionals, modals in the present, phrasal verbs, reported speech, wish, relative clauses</li></ul>

Learners taking the C1 Advanced exam should be able to: Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
