Present Continuous - a boardgame

Review all the basic tenses with  a focus on the TIME WORDS. One player can start at the START and another can start at the FINISH. Make sentences/questions/negatives related to monster or relevant to the student. A student finishes the game is he/she goes all around the board AND creates correct sentences or questions.

This took forever to put together, but it was SO worth it! 



Includes 3 Bingo cards and 17 Role-play cards. 

I make everything in Open Office and then convert to Doc.. so check that everything looks right before using. 



Start the class with the 7 target questions on the board. 

I have the students ask me the questions and I answer them with the target answers. 

Students ask each other the questions in pairs, then report their partner's responses if there's time. 



Then I give the role-play cards. Students might need help with some pronunciations  You might have to teach "Spouse, Swahili, Unemployed, and Household."

 

Next I hand out the Bingo cards… I explain how to play by having students ask me the questions (I use the Taxi Driver card).  Go around and help them look for the info on their cards.  They figure it out quickly. 



Now students stand up and play!  Monitor for correct target language… 

I folded the top of the paper where the questions are when it looked like the students had started to memorize the questions. 



Once students have a BINGO (5 up and down, 5 left to right, or 5 across) they can sit down. They don't have to ask questions, but they still have to answer. 



After everyone has a BINGO, I have the students make sentences with their winning squares… ____ is a _____, ____ lives in_____, etc… 



This lesson was designed for 1 hour class of adult (mixed) beginners and a 2 hour class of (pre) beginners.  



7 Questions Talking Bingo with Role-play Cards

We sometimes have to test the local emergency switchboard operators and I have some of the older role-plays left over. So, here they are. Cut out the cards and divide them into “operator cards” and “casualty cards.” On a board make a mind map of the kinds of questions emergency switchboard operators and accident victims would ask each other. Give an operator card to one student and a casualty card to another. The student with the operator card is on the emergency switchboard and must answer a ringing phone. The student with the casualty card must provide and answer relevant questions while the operator must ask for the appropriate details and decide on a course of action while giving suitable advice. The rest of the students must then vote on whether or not the operator acted for the best. Tell the operators to start with the phrase, “999 emergency. Can I help you?” (911 for our cousins across the pond) Take notes of any structure, pronunciation, grammar and intonation problems and then address them when the exercise is over.

The following boardgame will help your srudents revise some common irregular verbs. When  a student "lands" on a verb he/she needs to say a correct form in the past simple with that verb. If it's incorrect they have to come back to their previous place. Younger students can be asked to simply say the past form of the verb. I hope they like it!
