Comma Rules

Students choose the correct way to represent a date. They also write dates using correct punctuation and capitalization. This is a specific grammar point - but it is important to write dates correctly.

Comma Splices and How to Fix Them: An English Punctuation Lesson

This is a writing exercise to encourage students to use a variety of sentence types when writing. 



The assignment consists of comparing two short stories about Jack breaking his crown. The first story is written with only simple sentences, and the second one uses all three general sentence types.



After reading and comparing, the students write about a time they were scared using only simple sentences. Then, for revision, they will write the same story using different sentence types. 



Note: This assignment presupposes knowledge, or lessons taught, on the three general sentence types: simple, compound, and complex. 

Writing with Variety

Commas, apostrophe, capital letter and period are taught. Also, style with the use of examples at the beginning. The first three exercises are to prepare students for writing with correct punctuation. The last two are for students to correct punctuation and write a letter in a group. I recommend to give this in two classes. Ex. 1-3 in the fiirst class + homework at the end. Ex 4+5 in class 2. 

Punctuation

This worksheet will give students practice in merging two or more sentences into one.  It uses simple conjunctions and commas to reduce the writing. I used it as a warm-up for the class to work on immediately when they come into the room

Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets
