Today, we are going to solve a crime. Yesterday afternoon, a man stole a briefcase on the street. You are going to find out who did it and what the person looked like. If you are A, you are the police officer; if you are B, you are the witness. You need to describe the criminal' apperance by asking questions. 



If you notice the other ws I uploaded, I have adapted the game to the topic I am teaching recently which is about describing looks.

Cards for Mafia game. Mafia, Sheriff, Doctor, Citizen. A brilliant and funny game which allows to practise speaking, logic, detective skills. Useful in any language classroom.

Mafia Cards

In this developed version of ALIBI, students play the roles of suspects in a murder mystery, except in this version, there is an actual murderer. You will distribute these character cards (7) to students, and have the rest play police officers. The characters can spend 10 minutes socializing and interacting with each other, while the police officers prepare questions for the investigation (they'll be briefed about the main plot).

After, you can start the interrogation whichever way you'd like (characters interrogated in isolation, or do it as a speed-dating style, each character interviewed by an officer across the class).
Tips: students should not share the "secrets" in their cards (only if absolutely necessary), they also have the freedom to make up additional details about their characters when convenient.

I initially found a solve the crime document on islcollective and it inspired me to build a much larger game. / NB > Charlie SMITH to be changed for Charlie FIT + in the notes I wrote HER instead of HIM (cover for him)

Crime Role Play - House Robbery - Multi-Page Information Material

Alibi is a game for intermediate and above. It can be used for teaching past tense. Students are made to fabricate a story so as to make the police officers believe that they are not at that place when the actual crime took place. 

I have my students play Alibi to review the past tense after learning it, the game is ideal for intermediate and above students, so I have to make it easier to play it with my pre-intermediate level students. That’s why I use this template to help my students create questions when we play Alibi in class.

After 15 minutes of preparation, I divide the class in groups and have them interview the students that made up the stories. so they can ask them and write their answers. Then they compare their answers and decide whether they are guilty or not.

Question-builder supplement to play Alibi

Students will read about a crime that took place and act as the lead detective on the case so that they will need to ask the suspects questions and uncover the culprit. The goal is to build upon student's abilities to formulate more complex questions. Consider reviewing linking words/phrases to help maintain a natural flow between questions.

Solve the Crime (Making Questions)

A classic game that we all know and love.

Students simply have to describe the word on the card without saying any of the words at the bottom of the card. This can be done in different ways:

Team game. Students describe to their team or partner and get one point for each correct guess their partner makes within a set time limit.

Individual game. Students work in groups but take it in turns to describe. Whoever is first to guess correctly, gets one point. The winner is the student with the most points when all cards have been used.
