This is a lesson plan I prepared for our American Language Assistant to introduce the topic of sports as a means to foster diversity and tolerance. This is composed of a series of speaking activities to prepare a quick debate about the topic "Can sport bring people together?"

An article adapted to the style of Reading and Use of English Part 1 in the CAE exam. Answers are on the back. The Portuguese siesta is still a thing in the state, many years after independence from Portugal. Written by an Indian journalist in a wonderfully lighthearted style. I have included a debating section with personality cards.

First debate between Obama and Romney

A rather complete worksheet that can be done in an hour and a half or in two classes. Additionally, the vocabulary can be assigned as homework. The article is a reasonably high level but can be done with B1 students. A video link is provided for a short, 5-minute video on the subject which is then followed by a debate. I knocked this up for Halloween and my adult students really liked it. The answers are on the back.

Analyze the debates and the political views of the Candidates.
Pay attention to the vocabulary, the sentences, the vocabulary and the stylistics of the utterances.

Pre-intermediate level. A classic ESL debating/argumentative game with a second set of new character cards. Your students' task is to reason and agree on which survivors should have a place in the life raft. Bless up, Kisdobos :)

An article adapted from The Wall Street Journal with a standard gap-fill practice exercise included. This is followed by a controlled debate. An answer key is included.The text is slightly above B2 level but it´ll keep them on their toes and the debate/role-play should be fun.

Not really for children. Story about a very stupid accident followed by a debate with role-play cards. Can be used to check expressions of agreement and disagreement. 

The Dog and Jeep: Reading and Debate

My second TV Adjectives exercise. This one starts the same way as my exercises for SWOT analysis and the job-search worksheets but it also has a debate at the end with debating cards included. Good practice for students of business English or geeks that love TV shows. There is an answer key for the final mix and match exercise but everything is pretty subjective. Be prepared to field questions on vocab after each student reads their sections aloud in class.

Learners taking the B2 Upper-intermediate exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.</li><li>Interact with fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without difficulty for either party.</li><li>Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain an opinion on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.</li><li>Main grammar points to know: perfect tenses, mixed conditionals, modals in the present, phrasal verbs, reported speech, wish, relative clauses</li></ul>

Learners taking the C1 Advanced exam should be able to: Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
