They take a different cokoured pen and find the 90 mistakes. A full key is included. I have prepared this for native speakers as a SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) exercise, but it will also be useful for ESL students.

Find the mistakes

A wonderful picture, it is from the 1960s but was doing the rounds recently. They have to find over twenty mistakes, which provides for practice of many basic structures. The mistakes are outlined on page 2.

You can use this worksheet once your students have learned the present tenses to test their knowledge. Also, you can use it to see how good they are at correcting the mistakes.

Here is a worksheet where you have to spot the mistakes and correct them. The text is about Kobe Bryant who recently passed. Why not let the students work with a text about a person they know and maybe admired?

In this card game, students will pick a card and correct (if need be) the statement on the card. This game is all about accuracy and form and no emphasis is placed on fluency.

Here is a lovely scene set in an English town in the 1950s. Students have to complete the gap-fill and then find the thirteen mistakes. There is a key detailing the mistakes.

Have students work in A group and a B group and have gem find the mistakes in each question.  Check their work.  Then put a person from A and a preson from B together and ask and answer the questions.

Complete the text with the words in the box. Use each expression once. 
A typical error students make is with word order and much more. 
Highlight that when much more modifies a verb, it goes after the 
noun phrase: Students will enjoy much more the film club than 
before. (Correct form = Students will enjoy the film club much 
more than before.). Point out that when much more modifies 
an adjective or noun, it goes before the adjective or noun 
phrase: They replaced the computers with new ones much more 
expensive. (Correct form = They replaced the computers with 
much more expensive new ones.). Students also often make the 
mistake of adding at and/or the to the fixed phrase last but not 
least. At last but not the least, the publicity for the club is boring.
(Correct form = Last but not least, the publicity for the club is 
boring.). Another typical error is to use either just as or so … as
instead of as … as. I’m surprised as you. (Correct form = I’m as
surprised as you.). The candidates were not so experienced as I 
would like them to be. (Correct form = The candidates were not as
experienced as I would like them to be.).

Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
