A selection of English ESL flu printables

Used to help students practice giving advice, specifically to someone who is sick.  The target language is "Should/shouldn't".  



This is good reading, writing, and then speaking practice.  Students can give each other the advice they wrote.  

Flu Season

Beginner learners learn vocabulary related to the flu, flu shots and information about free flu shots in Australia. They read and copy vocabulary, complete a short gap fill, read two short texts and answer questions. There is also a link to an online reading activity about getting a flu shot.

A flu shot

It started like any flu with a cough, headache, chills, and fever. It
was called the "three day fever" when it began even though it took a
month for most to recover. In March of 1918, the flu broke out in
Kansas. In the months that followed, it spread to nearly every part of
the world. It began just as World War I was coming to a close. 


Spanish flu pandemic

The Spanish flu, also known as the 1918 flu pandemic, was a deadly pandemic in recent history. It spread worldwide during the year 1918-1919. The virus infected 500 million people – about a third of the world's population at the time. The death toll was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide, possibly as high as 100 million. This makes it the severest pandemic in human history.

I created this worksheet for my ESOL Entry 2 group who will be working on the theme ' Me & My Heath'. I have used a lot of health issues vocabulary & I have included two tasks for further understanding.

This worksheet has some conversation questions related to colds and the flu.  It might need to be altered depending on where it is used (for example, there is a question about wearing masks, which isn`t a custom everywhere).

First ask students to listen to the song, let them spot the title (it is repeated several times), then discuss : What is the song about ? What is "the flu"? Is it a nice day, when you have the flu? Explain. Etc. The video is nice, but doesn't help understand the meaning of the song. 



Afterwards, ask them to cut the labels, listen to the song and place the lyrics at the right place. 



When all lyrics are fully understood, students can individually, or in groups, work out the meaning, reading the lyrics one last time and doing activity D.
