Find the killer using communication and giving smart questions. Work with the information given to find the culprit. Teamwork is highly recommended, designed for multiple players.

Murder Mystery Conversation Game - Part 2

Another set of phrasal verb worksheets, this time with the preposition "up" and on the subject of technical problems and repairs. As always, there is a mix-and-match section which can be consolidated with a game of bingo before doing the gap-fill section. This is consolidated further with a story that is related in some way to the theme and then there is a debate that is related in some way to the story. There is also a mock part four of the Reading and Use of English section of the FCE exam which can be used a week or two later to jog the students' memories. Useful for engineers, mechanics, fitters, IT technicians, builders, architects etc. Answers are at the back.

Phrasal Verbs with Up - Technical Problems and Repairs

This is a game of Dobble - a popular children´s game where  players try to find an image shown on two cards. Each card in Dobble features eight different symbols, with the symbols varying in size from one card to the next. Any two cards have exactly one symbol in common.

Truth and lies - speaking activity. Create a groups and divide given situation between them. Each situation should duplicate. Every group must find a solution for given situation and compare their ideas with a group having the same situation to assess.

A simple board game for students to get to know each other or just to practice fluency. They move around the board and speak about the topic. You can give a time limit if you want. Alternatively, you can cut the worksheet and make students play by picking cards.

TO BE TO HAVE 

[CHARADES]

Getting students up and moving in the classroom is a great way to keep them focused. Charades is a game that most students already know, so it’s easy to use for teaching phrasal verbs.



Cut up the verbs and place them into a hat or bowl. Students can draw the phrasal verb and must act it out without using any words or sign language.



Decide whether hand-raising or calling out is better for this game, based on your classroom and students. Either way, the person who guesses the phrasal verb correctly gets to go next!



[Taboo: For When Charades Gets Old]

You can only play charades so many times! Taboo is another option that not only allows you to change it up a little bit, but also affords the student an on-the-spot opportunity to speak a bit too.



Taboo is a card game that you can easily recreate in the classroom. You can either use folded pieces of paper, as in charades, or you can make your own laminated cards to reuse time and time again.



The idea of Taboo is that you must describe a word (in this case, phrasal verb), without using the words on the card. Here’s an example:



For “grow up,” a student could say, “This means when children are getting older.” The student can keep talking and giving more clues until another student finds the right answer, but they cannot use the word “grow” or “up.”



For more advanced learners, you can make the game more challenging by adding a few extra “taboo” words to each card, such as “age,” “older” and “children” for the “grow up” card.



They’ll have to be more creative in their descriptions, and might give a clue such as, “When you are born, you are small, but you do this and become an adult.”

Phrasal Verbs Charades/Taboo

This is a memory game using auxiliary verbs (do, does, is, are, have, has, can). There are 32 cards and the aim is to match a question with its correct answer. You can laminate the cards for a longer use.

MEMORY GAME USING AUXILIARY VERBS

It's a straightforward numbers BINGO game for up to 48 students. 



Each card has the same 25 numbers on them but 5 numbers on each card are circled in red.



Every card is different. There are no two cards the same.



Also, there is a reverse side and a blank sheet included.



I have used my set many times already and for large classes it's a great warmer or closer.



HINT: I hand out the laminated cards with a very small piece of blank paper so they can write down their numbers as they are called out. I use a 'blank' paper card to mark off the numbers as I call them out.



It's a great listening exercise and lots of fun for pretty much all levels.



The students can call back the numbers from their card if they think they have won.
