[CHARADES]

Getting students up and moving in the classroom is a great way to keep them focused. Charades is a game that most students already know, so it’s easy to use for teaching phrasal verbs.



Cut up the verbs and place them into a hat or bowl. Students can draw the phrasal verb and must act it out without using any words or sign language.



Decide whether hand-raising or calling out is better for this game, based on your classroom and students. Either way, the person who guesses the phrasal verb correctly gets to go next!



[Taboo: For When Charades Gets Old]

You can only play charades so many times! Taboo is another option that not only allows you to change it up a little bit, but also affords the student an on-the-spot opportunity to speak a bit too.



Taboo is a card game that you can easily recreate in the classroom. You can either use folded pieces of paper, as in charades, or you can make your own laminated cards to reuse time and time again.



The idea of Taboo is that you must describe a word (in this case, phrasal verb), without using the words on the card. Here’s an example:



For “grow up,” a student could say, “This means when children are getting older.” The student can keep talking and giving more clues until another student finds the right answer, but they cannot use the word “grow” or “up.”



For more advanced learners, you can make the game more challenging by adding a few extra “taboo” words to each card, such as “age,” “older” and “children” for the “grow up” card.



They’ll have to be more creative in their descriptions, and might give a clue such as, “When you are born, you are small, but you do this and become an adult.”

Phrasal Verbs Charades/Taboo

Related to the thematic area of ‘Natural Disasters’. This being 'Hurricanes'. In order to  personalise the context relative to students' own. Utilising  modern music that incorporates language related to various forms of disaster. Simple listening task, preceded by prediction / guessing likely choice from context / rhyme etc. Use YouTube video as source of audio and song / lyrics video as source for students to self-check their answers. Get students to 'rate' their interest in the song on the  Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale which measures Hurricanes from 1 –Mild to 5 Catastrophic.

This worksheet is aimed to practise vocabulary. It consists of 3 parts. 

1) Matching vocabulary practice (feel free to invent your own ways how to use these pictures; 

2) Crossword (S1 has the clues on S2's worksheet and otherwise, so that they should communicate before they are able to write the word. --> Use one set of pictures from the matching activity, spread it on the table in front of each pair of students. Give each pair 2 different crosswords. Ask S1 to look at the first word in the clues, then find the picture of it and show the pictue to the S2 silently. Then S2 guesses the word on the picture and writes in into his/her crossword. Then they change the roles. At the end they can check the answers in each other's worksheets. (All the words in the crosswords should be written without spaces); 

3) Gap-filling activity. Students complete the text with the words in the box below and they also should check the form of every verb they write (mind 3rd person singular)

Daily Routines & Chores practice

This worksheet is a modefied version of a previous one I developed around the same tasks and theme. The idea is to introduce the meaning of the word invention and help students guess the word instead of giving it straight away. || Task 01: Students distinguish things that are creations of Allah - The Almighty God - and things that people make. || Task 02: Students write the name of each picture below it. You may let your students do it by themselves or do it with them. Some words might be new to them. Just make sure they got the spelling right because they will need it in the next task. ( I included comet + fossils to recycle those words from the previous unit in UAE Parade which is Dinosours). || Task 03: Just a question to raise to students and give them the chance to guess what those things might be called. If some already knew the word and gave the answer, you can just tell them to move to the next task to check their answers. || Task 04: In each grid, students need to color/shade the letters that spell the name of the picture next to it. The letters are not necessary in order - See the answer to get a clearer idea - and each grid contains a syllable. || Task 05: Students need to put the three syllibi together and write the word in the space given in the title.

From ESL Pals, this amazing ESL describing people lesson plan starts with a fun warm-up vocabulary game. Secondly, students move on to a vocabulary exercise that teaches them words related to a person's physical appearance.

Taboo type cards for guessing words. Before playing the game review all the words and make sure the students know their meaning. Explain the rules of taboo - that you are unable to say the word that needs to be guessed.

Ss first try to guess the tense in which the verbs of the first part must be, then they listen to confirm. After that they can continue listening to the song and find the word errors in the second paragraph. This is a quick but fun idea for reviewing the differences between past simple and present perfect, since both are present in the first paragraph.

This worksheet works as a warm-up or as wrap-up activity. It can be used to practice simple present with wh-questions. Give nine students (feel free to add new boxes to suit the number of your students) the cards of the worksheet. Give them some time to read, then put them either in pairs or groups or let each one of them introduce him/ herself in front of the class to have more interaction.
