The language journalists use in headlines in order to attract readers' attention differs from the ordinary one. They use various techniques to achieve this. This worksheet includes some information on the ones commonly used and four exercises for students to practise.

high school students with a specialization in communication will be able to work on journalistic news by putting the headlines in order. the idea is that they are cut out by paragraph and delivered mixed so that they in groups make the headline and then explain it in their own words.

Headlines Project Work - Create Headlines for News Stories

A small exercise on common idiomatic expressions. A key is provided. Great for classes on the topic of newspapers. After doing the exercise get the students to explain why those particular idioms were used for the headlines and explain the play on words. You could also get them to do a short news report on the stories in threes, one as an anchor, one as a witness/expert and the other as the on-the-spot reporter.

NEWSPAPER HEADLINES - Useful Language

In this fun worksheet students have to guess the homophone based on a 'crossword clue'. They then look at newspaper headlines and guess the missing homophone. Finally they get to write their own newspaper headlines and read them to a partner who has to correctly write them down.

This is for reading, speaking and writing activity. Students are asked to put in the right headlines for each information. Then, students need to get  information and data on why people like to travel. At the end, they need to write a short report.

Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
