A selection of English ESL homophone printables

Some examples of homophones in English - words that sound the same but have different spellings and/or meanings. The teacher first reads out a series of homophone pairs for the students to match up, then students do a picture-guided sentence completion activity to reinforce the different meanings of the words in each pair.

Homophones - Matching Pairs

Expanding students' vocabulary. The file contains lots of examples, but also spelling as well as pronunciation exercises with audio and phonetic transcripts. All references are included so you can provide the students with keys if you want. This is also perfect material for online teaching.

Homophones and homographs

This focuses on some common homophones in English that I think are most likely to confuse the students and cause the most amount of mistakes. It could be a good poster to have in your classroom to help students.

Common Homophone Confusion

Set of 25 homophonous word pairs including images and pronunciations. Students are meant to arrange each of the cards face down; then, they take turns flipping them over in search of a matching pair ( a card that has the same pronunciation as the one they revealed). The student with the most amount of word pairs is the winner.

Homophones (Memory game)

It is the typical "odd one out" exercise but with homophone words. Students have to identify the ODD word in the group and write its homophone on the right side.

Fun with Homophones 1

This is a useful ws to practice writing words that sound aloke. Sometimes words with the long 'a' sound the same but their spelling is different. Students have to fill in the blanks using the right homophone.

There is a short card game that can be printed, laminated and used to consolidate, and below is a wordwall game to play online. The answers are on the back. Homophone Fun nº 5

In this fun worksheet students have to guess the homophone based on a 'crossword clue'. They then look at newspaper headlines and guess the missing homophone. Finally they get to write their own newspaper headlines and read them to a partner who has to correctly write them down.

Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
