This is a reading passage, with a true or false exercise. First, they have to put the verbs in brackets into the past simple tense. A full key is included. The story is based on a joke and has a twist in the tale.

A husband can't stand his wife's cat and plots to get rid of it, but the plot backfires. An old joke/urban legend which will give some good practice of the past simple tense in a fun way. Answers provided.

This worksheet focusing on jobs vocabulary can either be used as an individual or team reading exercise (page 1) or as a team game (page 2). As an extension, you can even make it into a writing lesson which students will surely enjoy. Full instructions provided on page 3. Have fun. 



Please note that some of the jobs are depicted as being female jobs such as nurse but this is not always necessarily so although in many countries the proportion of female nurses is much higher than male nurses. It goes without saying that both men and women can both be nurses and doctors so maybe take this moment to create awareness among your students in the classroom. Of course housewives are female as well but you might want to introduce the word house husband to make it clear that it is not necessarily the woman who stays at home.

Pair up students (husband-wife) and have them meet an immigrations officer separately. Before the interview they have 10 minutes to prepare their story together. They'll be asked 10 questions. In the interview both students have to tell the exact same story, because if the officer finds 3 differences in their stories, the wife will be deported back to her native country.

Ss read the descriotions and choose the best gift they can think of for each girlfrined/boyfriend (they should be very specific, f.i. Louise wants to change her look to make her husband a surprise, so what exactly should she change about her look?) Then Ss can choose the "best gifts" and name a winner.
