To improve your skills in making inferences and understanding references in texts. Especially to complement reading and comprehension tasks. Young learners will find this quite useful.

INFERENCE AND REFERENCE FOR GRADE 8 AND ABOVE

The first picture is 'The Bathers' by Seurat. The students choose the correct alternative in the brackets. On page 2, a picture for them to describe, with prompts. Remind them to make inferences, using 'maybe' or modals. 

Describing a Picture

A photo with exercises to describe it - choose the correct option, fill the blanks, answer the questions. Set to landscape. If you haven't yet taught modals (might etc..), get the students to make inferences using 'maybe'. 

Picture description

A series of photos taken from pixabay. There are various exercises to complete and then some photos for your students to describe. I have also uploaded this series of photos to help with inference and using modals. 

Describing photos

A set of exercises around a central photo: answering the 'wh' questions and then making inferences. My students can't get enough of this type of activity. I want them to be able to write something about absolutely anything and this is good practice! 

Describing a photo

I ask my students to comment on each picture and make inferences. Then they prepare a short talk on whether they support or reject capital punishment. Still a useful debate which makes them think.

A good picture to provide some practice with prepositions. There is also a true or false activity. Then, they have to make inferences about the owner of the bedroom. Note that when we are not sure if the person is male or female, we use 'they'.

Learners taking the C1 Advanced exam should be able to: Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
