I's a reading activity based on the most important inventions and discoveries that helped us to live in a better condition in our everyday life. This task will help the Ss. to improve their reading and comprehension skills. It also includes a speaking part.

Home Invention Words

Picture based introduction to inventions where students will guess which countries invented ten items or activities. I will ask them to explain their choices, talk about the inventions that have changed the world and if any are on this list.

I started the lesson with some free discussion about things we couldn't live without. 

Then students ask and answer questions to piece together information about the invention of umbrellas. 

After that Ss work together to complete the various conversation activities. 



This lesson was designed for a 2 hour class for adult intermediates. It ran 10-15 minutes short in some classes, so you might want to add more discussion between each activity.

Ss have to, in groups of 3 or 4, make up their own inventions! They have to brainstorm some ideas first on a separate piece of paper, then they have to fill in the make your own invnetion worksheet. For the reasons box, they have to tell the story of how they thought of their invention. Stress that they must use the past continuous.

Through this practice worksheet, learners, in groups, re-order the complex sentences to talk about accidental discoveries and inventions using the past simple for short actions and past continuous for long actions.

Accidental Discoveries and Inventions

This worksheet is a modefied version of a previous one I developed around the same tasks and theme. The idea is to introduce the meaning of the word invention and help students guess the word instead of giving it straight away. || Task 01: Students distinguish things that are creations of Allah - The Almighty God - and things that people make. || Task 02: Students write the name of each picture below it. You may let your students do it by themselves or do it with them. Some words might be new to them. Just make sure they got the spelling right because they will need it in the next task. ( I included comet + fossils to recycle those words from the previous unit in UAE Parade which is Dinosours). || Task 03: Just a question to raise to students and give them the chance to guess what those things might be called. If some already knew the word and gave the answer, you can just tell them to move to the next task to check their answers. || Task 04: In each grid, students need to color/shade the letters that spell the name of the picture next to it. The letters are not necessary in order - See the answer to get a clearer idea - and each grid contains a syllable. || Task 05: Students need to put the three syllibi together and write the word in the space given in the title.

Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well
