Help students improve their spelling with this worksheet to discriminate English sounds. Have them listen to the words and classify them in the categories "Short e" and Long e". I made it myself.

1) Matching images and words with ee spellings.  Pre-teaching may be required. 

2) Gap fill letters for words on first page with long ee. 

3) Read and circle words with the long ee sound.  Could be done as a listening activity with the teacher reading the words. 

Teacher should draw attention to 'she', 'clean' and 'eat' with the same long e sound.

Long e with ee and ea spellings

Students hear the animal names and have to circle the animal if it has a long e sound. Once they've circled the animals they should count how many have the long e sound and put the number in the box. Then they can color the animals. This exercise helps with letter sound identification.

I made another version of the well-known Guess Who boardgame for ESL learners with characters I created using the avatar creator tool at http://avachara.com . Sample questions and gameplaying expressions can be found on the second page of the worksheet.

The game is meant to give you an opportunity for practising speaking with your class in a fun way.



Here's how to play the Guess Who game in ESL class: Hand out one copy of the boardgame to each student. Put students in pairs and let each student choose a 'mystery person' secretly. Each student needs to guess each other's mystery person faster than their partner. It is only allowed to ask 'YES' or ‘NO’ questions (and of course, answer 'YES' or 'NO'). If something is unclear from the picture, your students can respond by saying "I can't tell" or "It's not possible to tell" (in this case, you can decide whether the student can ask another question, or if it's their partner's turn). Question by question, students narrow down the list of possible mystery persons until they feel confident enough to make a guess. Usually when one has been ruled out of the last two persons remaining.



I recommend that you hand out one transparent plastic foil along with each Guess Who boardgame. Students can place the foil over the boardgame and using an erasable magic marker cross out on it the characters that they have ruled out. 



How do students figure out who cannot be their opponent's mystery person? For example, "Is your person blond?" If the answer is 'Yes', then they cross out all the characters that are not blond. If the answer is 'No', they cross out all the characters that are blond.



Encourage students to answer with auxiliary verbs, not just a simple Yes or No, e.g. "Yes, he or she is/does", "No, he or she isn't/doesn't" (using the form "he or she" until the gender of the mystery character has been revealed in order to keep this info hidden). Once the gender is revealed, they can go on using the specific gender in responses, e.g. "Yes, he is", "Yes, he does", "No, he isn't", No, he doesn't". You could also opt for forbidding questions about the mystery person's gender. This way you'll see longer games and more questions.



You can use this worksheet in your ESL/EFL classes to practise body parts, clothes, (garments and accessoriese), and asking closed (Yes/No) questions in an entertaining way. Playing this game is a proven way of getting your students engaged in speaking English.



I recommend using this ESL printable worksheet up till pre-intermediate level, as the game is focused on asking questions and giving short answers in the Present Simple tense using the auxiliary verb 'have', and the Present Continuous tense using the verb "wear".





Guess Who boardgame with 20 characters

With the easy board game, learners will practise the present perfect in an enjoyable way. Every square provides a verb and a picture clue. Every time a correct question is asked, the game can be used as a communicative activity whereby players ask each follow-up questions. (e.g. Have you ever ridden a camel? Where did you do this? Was it fun? How much did it cost? How long did it last? etc.) Answer key and grammar tip included. LetÂ´s make learning fun! 

Board Game - Have You Ever?

This paper doll worksheet can take up an entire 45 min lesson. Have the students colour and cut the clothing along the dotted line (I uploaded another paper doll worksheet without the dotted lines for older students who can cut. In this worksheet the students will need help cutting the hair out).



After they colour and cut the doll and the clothing. Have them lay out the clothing on their desk and then give instructions to the students.



Ex. Put the shirt and skirt on the girl! (the student will put the female hair on the doll and put the shirt and skirt over the dolls body)



I made a larger doll on the board and would put the correct clothing on the doll and the students checked that they were right

Part 2 of the BULATS (Business English) speaking test requires candidates to choose one (from 3) topics and speak for 1 minute. They have 1 minute to choose and prepare, and then one minute to speak. The topic has 3 points which must be included, and one question which must be answered. This document has 20 topic cards that you can print and cut out to practise the activity.  I created them for my (employed) students so they may not be suitable for all candidates, but feel free to adapt the document to suit your own circumstances.  Note that the topics are not taken from past exam papers - they were just invented by me so please do not think that these particular topics will necessarily crop up in the exam. The purpose of the cards is to allow candidates to practise preparing and organising their thoughts quickly and getting familiar with how long one minute feels when they are speaking.
