Magnets

This was a quiz I created for a group of students after studying material types, what they feel like, and word order. While learning about metals, we also learned what kinds are magnetic. We talked about how a compass works in brief terms, which you see reflected in the quiz. At the beginning is a section on phonics listening and some question words and key phrases that we have also been revising throughout the course.

This is a quiz i created for a student group after studying materials and their basic properties. Key vocabulary was:

These file can be used as a poster on the classroom walls or as a flashcards to teach how to give directions. There are expressions such as;

Go straight ahead

Cross the street

Take the first left/right

Take the second/left/right

Turn left

Turn right

It's on your left/right.

Go past...

You can cut the pictures from the commands and laminate them separately to have students play matching game. If you want you can stick magnets at the back of the pictures and this way the students can play on the board.

Snake Race is our original game similar to Snakes and Ladders, but easier. It is great for lower-level students in ESL classes, and you only need dice and place markers (like erasers or magnets). Just roll the dice, count as you move along the snake, and say the word you land on. If you are lucky and land on a “Roll again” spot, you can try one more time. But if you are unlucky, you might have to go back a couple of spaces. If your students are confident speakers, they can practice conversations by asking original questions based on the words they land on.

This is a group activity. First it is a "read and run" dictation, then they solve a puzzle. 



Students can work in groups of 2-4 people. 



First  print and cut the 16 clues in large font / big strips of paper. 

Then stick the clues around the classroom (ideally using magnets). The clues should be facedown so students cannot read them from afar. 



To start, one student from each group will run to any clue. 

They read and remember the clue.

Then they return to their group and tell them what the clue said. 

The group members will write the clue. 

The students can take as many trips as needed to remember the clue, but the teacher can recommend that they try to remember half of the clue / one sentence at a time. 

The students should take care to also copy the clue number so they can keep track of what they have already written. 



Students cannot take the clue cutout back to the group! And they should not try to read across the room (some might haha). 



It's fun if the "read and run" is a race among the groups. 



Once all 16 clues are copied, the group will use the clues to fill in the table. 

Most clues are straightforward but some will require logical deductions. 

At the end, 1 box in the table will remain empty, and that will be the answer to the puzzle question. 





Of course, teachers can opt to do the logic puzzle only, where they skip the "read and run" and simply give the students the handout with the clues and students solve the puzzle. 



Logic Puzzle (Jobs)

This is a boardgame to practise vocabulary on toys. It can be printed or used on whiteboard screen with magnets for each student. There are some "Bang" squares where students will have to go back to Start, the lobster means 1 or two squares back and the frog means 1 or 2 squares forward: frisbee, bicycle, plane, balloon, drums, train, car, skip rope, robot, building blocks, boat, scooter...

Flashcards to help your students write the date on their own. I plastified mine and put a magnet at the back so that the kids, each in turn can go and write the date at the board, without me cheking for spelling or having to re write unclear letters.

This is an easy worksheet to practice talking about farm animals and listening to about a busy farmer's day https://supersimple.com/song/farmer-in-the-dell/. The first exersice can be used as a bingo board, too. The learners hide five animals with stickers or magnets and if they have the animal, that the teacher name, they open it. The winner has all the animals opened. When the learners sing the song, they do the actions.

Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets
