Students work in pairs, put the situation-cards face down on the desk. They take turns. One student reads a situation, the other gives his/her advice by speculating and using modals of deduction:

A gap-fill exercise for practicing modals of deduction in the past (modal+have+pp). Students choose the appropriate/best modal and put the verb in brackets into the correct form to complete the sentences. ANSWER KEY INCLUDED

Modals of Deduction (Past Tense)

This worksheet can be use to review modal verbs, specially perfect modals. It includes the key and contains three exercises: in the first one students change the given sentece into the past, while in the second one they have to complete the gaps with a perfect modal verb. In the last exercise students make their own deductions in the past (this exercise can have more than one correct answer, the ones given in the key is just one of the options)

Perfect modal verbs 

I use this domino after having explained the grammar and before doing a "fill-in-the gap" exercise. I play this domino in groups of three or four. Unlike in a "real" domino, cut each square individually, give each students 6-8 squares, put the rest on a pile. S1 puts his/her card on the table, the next students tries to find either the appropriate deduction or situation. If (s)he doesn´t have the matching card, one card from the pile is taken. If it still doesn´t match, it´s the next student´s turn

Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets
