A selection of English ESL moral printables

An old fable with a moral. They answer the questions and do the true or false section. A full key is provided. Before presenting the worksheet, I ask my students to complete the challenge. 'You have one pound/euro (or whatever), what can you buy to fill a room?' Just like, before introducing 'the Monkey's Paw', you ask them to write down their three wishes.

Another folk tale (this one is Tibetan) for INTERMEDIATE students. Students must read the tale and answer seven reading comprehension questions.

Students are also asked to choose ADJECTIVES to describe the tiger and the frog and explain the reasons for their choices.



Very good reading activity that can lead into a discussion about personality adjectives.

This happened to me years ago. I didn't know that fable. Students read the tale, do the true or false section, then answer the questions. Then they can think up alternative morals (lessons). Answer key included.

It could be used to work with the simple past and the use of would. Students should tell the story with their own words.  Teacher can ask many questions related to the story.

The Businessman and the Fishermen

It's a fable with a moral. It's about a king who goes walk-about to meet his subjects. They have to answer the questions. There is an answer key included on page two.

A fable: The Devil and the Donkey

A short fable with a true or false exercise and some questions. Then they are asked to think up a moral for the tale. An answer key is included. This is a shorter version of a story I have already uploaded. I mean, seriously, geese are under-rated, they are amazing creatures. A fable: Gertie the lazy goose

A short reading for PRE-INTERMEDIATE students. This is an Indian folk tale about a monkey who loses all his peas when her tries to catch one that he has dropped.



Students must answer four questions using exactly THREE WORDS from the text. This is preparing students for IELTS short answer questions where the number of words used in the answer is stipulated.



Students also match eight adjectives to their meanings.
