A worksheet on the use of mustn’t, have to and don’t have to. There are thirty sentences so it maybe a good idea to do half of the exercise in one lesson and the other half in the following one (or set it as homework). The sentences in the exercise come from Tatoeba. Key included.

I found that many of my students get confused with the grammar rules for the usage for "Have to, Must, Mustn’t, Don’t Have To, Needn’t Have, Didn’t Need To" so I put together a simplified version, intended as a handout. Exercises are plenty but when it comes to the grammar rules, the students usually give up. I tried to keep it as simple as possible.

This is a lesson plan I've made for my teacher training final exam.

The lesson plan is divided into two lessons. In the first one, students will be introduced to must and mustn’t. They will watch a video with which they will practise either classroom language and using must and mustn’t to talk about rules, and either write rules for their ideal teacher. In the second lesson, students will be introduced to have to and its negative and interrogative forms. They will listen to a track about foreign cultural habits and daily routines, and read the text related. They will then play a 20 questions game and write rules for a hotel. This last lesson will help students review vocabulary about tourism, and develop their intercultural awareness.

The worksheet is for form four. The worksheet is compiled considering vocabulary taught in  English Step by Step 2,  lesson 21. The lesson is titled Erik is ill.  First is the listening task. Second is matching. Match picture and the correct word. Third exercise is word ordering and translating the sentences. Forth task is about using have to and mustn’t  in a sentence.  Fifth task is a word search. The sixth task is for those students, who manage to complete the worksheet faster than 45 minutes.

Group or pair work. This activity was designed to be used as speaking practice, but can also be adapted for writing.
Each card has a different situation where an obligation needs to be expressed using ‘must’ or ‘have to’.
Students take turns picking a card and creating sentences with "must" or "have to." For example: "You have a big exam tomorrow." → "I must study hard tonight." / "I have to study for the exam tomorrow."
Encourage them to explain why they used "must" or "have to" for each scenario.

To make it harder, students could also create sentences with “mustn’t” or “don’t have to”.

Paint 10 separate blocks in your battlefield. Blocks mustn’t touch each other. Don’t show your paper each other. Shoot in turns asking questions in the Present Simple Tense. You win when your opponent’s ships are found. Enjoy!
