This worksheet aims to give plenty of practice of the Past simple and continuous tenses to B1 students.  There is a logical flow of the exercises which start with the simple past and proceed with the introduction of the continuous.  Later both tenses are used in order to convey the meaning of longer actions interrupted by shorter actions or 2 progressive actions happening simultaneously.

They decide if the verbs are in the past simple or past continuous, then do the exercises. A full key is included. I use an anecdote like this to start off discussion: should we give to the homeless, or not? Is there a difference between giving food and giving money? Fyi: Greggs is a famous chain of bakers. In fact people say they are going for 'a Greggs': a pasty, a pie or a sandwich. 

RC: A kind act

A walk down memory lane which won't be too long or tedious. This activity can be a good warm-up if you revise Past Simple and Past Continuous and need some dynamic to kick-start or round off the lesson. Finding out that your students can't actually remember a lot from "not so ago" can also be fun and a nice stimulus to e.g. write a blog or a diary - in English, of course! :)

Here's a scary ghost story aimed at teenagers at pre-intermediate and intermediate levels. Students read the story, answer some comprehension questions and imagine and write the ending.
