A partially complete quiz which students can complete themselves and then conduct in pairs. This resource is designed to complement the 'psychologists game' posted by another user.

Outline task to students

Divide the class into two groups - psychologists and patients

Hand out problems to patients (you choose interesting problems before the class and write them on small pieces of paper)

Psychologists pair up with patients

When everyone is finished change partners

When patients have spoken to three psychologists they decide whose advice is best

Swap roles; patients become psychologists and vice versa

Don't take this one literally, of course. :) The title of this questionnaire is simply to gave your students a clear indication that they will do some emotional 'stripping' as the issues like personality, phobias, relationships etc.  will pop up in the session. It's not easy to weave this aspect into our regular classes, because most of us are reluctant to talk about feelings in our mother tongues, let alone in English. But everything is possible if you dare, so this exchange may reveal a totally new universe both to your students and you as their mentor. Good luck! 

A good psychologist ...? - speaking practice

A game to practise the conditional and reported speech. A good activity to open a group up and have some fun in the class.

Objectives



1.Provoke a fun and light hearted conversation in the classroom.

2.Conditional Type II

The doctor must use the conditional type II as mush as possible with phrases such as:

I think you should … if you were a dog, you would …

3.Reported speech

The patient will practice reported speech when they report back to the class about the advice the doctor has given them.

Procedure



1.Cut out the situation cards.

2.Cut out the top half of first page and give out.

3.Split the class into groups of two.

4.Talk about the joke.

5.Go over any relevant vocabulary.

6.Explain the role play situation to them.

7.Tell each group who is the doctor and patient.

8.Give the patient one card face-down.

9.Give each group 5-10 minutes to develop the situation.

Note:  Try to encourage the groups to act out the role play situation as they will enjoy it much more.

10.Each patient reports to the class saying what the doctor advised them to do.

11.Change roles in each group.

12.Vote which doctor gave the best advice.



PSYCHOLOGIST'S GAME

Put students in pairs, then tell them they’re going to act out psychologist and client. Client will describe his/her dream and they will interpret it together. Let them decide who will be the pscyhologist first.  Then make the pscyhologists close their eyes before showing the clients one of the four “dream images” in this document. They should describe the scene to their partners and invent some more events to the dream. Finally, they should interpret the dream together.



Warmer: Interpreting dreams

This can be a quick ESL warmup activity in 2x3 minutes or you can devote more time to it if it fits your lesson aims, since it is an activity that sparks students' imagination and is guaranteed to keep them engaged.



Recommended for highschool students and adults, as the activity presupposes ability for abstract thought and working with symbols. 



How to do this warmer activity:



1.	Put students in pairs, then tell them about the activity: "You’re going to act out psychologist and client. The client is supposed to tell the the psychologist about his/her dream. You will interpret the dream together. You will take turns in being the psychologist and the client."



2.	The psychologists need to close their eyes. You then show the clients one of the three “dream scenes”. 



3.	Next, they should describe the dream to their partners by adding some more events to the dream scene depicted in the photo. 



4.	Finally, they should interpret the dream and the symbols in it together.
