These are my homemade cards for the ever-popular 'Taboo' Game.  If you're unfamiliar with the game, a student takes a card and stands in front of his/her group.  S/he must explain the meaning of the word at the top of the card (in bold) without saying that word or any of the other words on the card or any related words from the same root.  His/her group must then guess the word for a point.  The group with the most points wins!  This is a great way to encourage students to circumlocute so they know what to do when they can't think of the right word.

'Taboo' Game Cards

This is not really an activity, it's more like a poster or a handout about the origins of the names of the week days. You can use it as a filler or as you wish. You may also point out that the English language has strong roots on the Norse culture, that's how most of the days of the week got their name (apart from Sunday, Monday and Saturday - the last one being the name of a Roman god). I'm a real Mythology freak, so I think this is an interesting subject to discuss! I hope you enjoy it!

The worksheet is based on the video that explores the origins of Easter traditions and introduces major US Easter symbols. The tasks help to develop students’ listening skills and vocabulary. The assignment contains listening for gist, listening for details, and comprehension questions. The speed of speaking may seem a bit fast for weaker students, but the tasks include text-based prompts that can be used as scaffolds for listening tasks. The students get a chance to explore the traditions common for their culture and find out more about the roots of popular Easter symbols.
