Silent Letters - L

An exercise to evaluate students' reading and understanding the use of silent letters in English word formations.  Some of the words used in this exercise are in gibberish, and have no meaning in English; they are used here only for the purpose of sounding in-line with the correct words.  This also checks the students' spelling abilities, and their accuracy in reading.  Mostly, this exercise comes to ensure the students' familiarity with silent letters in the English language, AFTER they have already gone over the topic learned the vocabulary.

Students practice reading aloud the sentences given. In each of the sentences given there are some letters that are are pronounced silently. While student A reads, student B checks whether those letters are pronounced silently or not. (Those letters are indicated in parantheses in student B's card) Then, students switch roles.

It's very important to practise sounds, as a first step, before teaching phonics. Hope you find it helpful =)


Silent B -mb , -bt Wordlist

This is a silent letter pronunciation worksheet. Remembering to NOT pronounce some letters can be very hard to do. 

It is for advanced and adult students, with lots of written and grammar skills, but can easily be adapted for your students' levels.

The first pages are using the silence of butterfly wings as a tool for remembering the different silent letters. There are butterflies all over the worksheet. 

In the past, I have found that just by saying "remember the butterflies" my students connect to their memories and it is easier for them to recall the right pronunciation.

For those of you that do not use mnemonic tecniques in your class, I have included a "straight" version in the last pages of this upload. They are the same as the first, but without the butterflies. Just print what you need.

As for the vocabulary columns, the pronunciation is based on Spanish students, so you may want to change that to fit your students' particular language of origin.

This is a worksheet that requires the teacher's full attention, as he/she must listen and correct pronunciation. 

SILENT LETTERS  with and without mnemonics

Two texts and use of English activities, one is about the creation of one of the most popular Christmas carols 'Silent Night', the other one is about the Christmas Truce.  Lyrics activity, that can be used as warm-up.

Reading Comprehension activity that I use with my intermediate level students.  This worksheet can cover a whole range of skills: reading, spelling, writing.  It can also be a good pronunciation skill practice, by assigning students to take turns reading couple of sentences as an alternative to silent individual reading.  

My House

A fun listening comprehension activity to Justin Bieber's Love Yourself for lower levels of English. As students listen to the song, they must fill in the spaces with the correct words. Another part requires students to put the chorus in the correct order. Goes over American colloquialisms such as "wanna" and the silent g in some words ending in -ing.
