Weird and Funny Phobias (full lesson material)

A vocabulary cooler. After pre-teaching the vocab I cut up the facts and gave SS a fact each to describe to their partner. I did use a short tourism youtube video to help them feel at home first. Pronunciation and word stress was an important part of this lesson for new NZers. I just noticed a mistake which I have tried to change - Sir Edmund Hillary climbed Mt Everest in 1953, not 73!

A gap-fill worksheet for elementary students to test their use of simple quantifiers. Students work in pairs and read the amusing dialogue between Maya and Tashi and decide which quantifier to use to fill each gap.

Once completed, students can practice the dialogue focusing on intonation and sentence stress.

AIMS:
The major aim of this exercise is to talk about past activities.
•	to practice Past Simple Tense
•	to illustrate past activities
•	to practise informal conversation
•	to increase vocabulary of verbsCONTEXT:Tell your students they can imagine a conversation with their best friend who is really stressed and they are having a talk on how to take care of oneself.PROCEDURE:
1.	Tell your student(s) to get into pairs and inform them that they are going to exchange information on when they did some activities last time.2.	IN A GROUP: pre-teach the vocabulary necessary to talk about past activities in the worksheet. This activity is a great follow up after lessons on Past Simple Tense. Present your students with the context and one or two examples. Tell your students to work in pairs and write their answers in the worksheet. Instruct them to focus on past forms of the verbs in answers. Finally, ask your group for feedback, ask them to report to you who did what and when.3.	ONE-TO-ONE lesson: Explain to your student that you will ask each other questions and write down the answers. If your student has difficulties with vocabulary, be prepared to show/explain/teach a few examples.

Intermediate level worksheet.  Used to practise and recognise Subject + verb + complement.  The students have to re-arrange the words to make coherent sentences.  They can then practise the dialogue, working on intonation and stress patterns.

At the Hospital - gapped dialogue

Adjectives and comparison - comparative form of adjectives.

A) learn the words.

B) first explain the rules. you can also ask kids if any of the characters' icons match the adjectives given.

C) put stress on the word "than". practise the correct order of the words.

D) kids make their choices - what do they think? practise the correct order of the words.

E) kids give adjectives describing their friends - then try and draw the character of the described person.

As you'll see in the lesson plan, students discuss topics and questions related to war in general and what they know about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Students also learn a few really important vocabulary words from the video, including escalation, annexation, sovereignty, ousting, and a buffer.



In the second Post-Viewing Activity on Fluentize, there is a short grammar activity on the usage of irregular past simple with a passive voice construction based on a quote from the video:



"Yanukovych fled the country after being impeached by parliament.”

I would just like to note here that due to the sensitivity of the situation, I would use your best judgment on whether to use this topic and proceed with discussions about it in class. You know your students best, and you could probably even ask students whether they wish to discuss it or not. A teacher may have students who wish to discuss it, and other students maybe not. It could very well be too sensitive or distressing for some students. Of course, I also understand the importance for students to be able to have discussions and express their ideas and opinions about such an important global topic. All in all, a lot of it may depend on the background of the students and how closely they are tied to the situation. If teachers decide to proceed with this topic, I would advise them to steer things as objectively as possible and focus on the history and background of the conflict itself.
