A selection of English ESL sugar printables

If you have students who work with a lot of Brits, or are moving to the UK, this might be helpful for them. It's a role play about how to offer and accept a cup of tea. There are a few tasks presenting and practicing the target language before the role play task itself.



Tips



You can use the illustrations to explain 'kettle', 'sugar lump' and 'pot' if the students get stuck.



Point out that these are the general phrases but that some regions may have their own unique slang. It's all right, because no one except locals will be expected to know it.



During the role play in exercise 4, if you have access to a kettle, you could actually make the drinks for authenticity. Why not?

Time for Tea Role Play

1. The objective is to explore vocabulary to use when talking about healthy and unhealthy habits. Also, to practice listening comprehension.

5. In the video, kids answer questions such as What happens if you eat too much sugar? what\'s your favorite sugary food? what is healthy food? 

Healthy-Unhealthy listening comprehension

Something I cooked up for homework or a Zoom lesson. It's a fun activity which presents and practises food partitives. All the activities should take around 45 minutes to do.



There are two ways to use it:



1) Print it out and set it as homework. Students take the worksheet home and look around their kitchens by themselves.



2) Use it in a zoom lesson. For exercises 2-3, ask the students to take their device into the kitchen and go through the scavenger hunt with them. 



Tips

Depending on the age of the student, you may need to ask someone to supervise. 



Be sure to tell students that items must be the right food AND the right partitive to count in the scavenger hunt. For example, you can't use a jar of jam or a tray of eggs. They can use them for Ex.3, though.



For Ex.4, remind the students to make plurals when there is more than one of something i.e. "We have two boxes of eggs." NOT "We have two box of eggs."

In The Kitchen

an activity for cooking cinnamon sugar and walnut swirls, recipe and feedback worksheet. Children read out the instructions in the recipe and make it. Write down the new words and learn them. There is also a short comprehension activity after the cooking in which children need to answer questions about the instructions in the recipe,  and also write a recipe on their own.

This is an easy recipe to make Welsh cakes.

Ideal to review basic vocabulary (flour, sugar, salt...) as well as learn specific cooking vocabulary.

If you have access to a kitchen or cooking facilities at school, these cakes are quick and easy to make and very good too!

Here you find the lyrics of the song It happends, from Sugarland. Trying to make it easier, I have prepared a worksheet where students have to write some parts in the correct orders and, in others, they have to choose the correct word. Hope you like it!

Song It happens -- Sugarland

The wolf is trying to set the story straight of how he came to be 'big and bad'. It's the story of the 3 little pigs from the perspective of Alexander T. Wolf. He plans a cake for his grandmother's birthday. He checks in his cabinet for sugar, but finds nothing. He has a cold but he goes to ask his neighbors, the pigs, for some sugar. The end result is two ham dinners, Mr. Wolf in jail and his poor sweet granny gets no birthday cake.

Choose the right option

I created this for a one-hour mixed-age group lesson; 7-9 year-olds. This page can be used as the last activity with a lesson about Valentine's Day vocabulary and poetry. First, you can introduce the poem "Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet and so are you!" Next you can erase the adjectives and see if they remember them (red, blue, sweet). Then, cut up the four lines of the poem and have four kids at a time come up and choose a line. They have to put themselves in order how the poem goes and then read the line they chose. 

Finally, hand out this page and ask them to write the poem on the four lines, prompted by the illustrations. Then they can color it and add their name and who they are going to give it to.
