Transition Words

Transition words make our writing more coherent and cohesive. These transition words have been given in a worksheet to choose from to complete the sentences. The teachers are advised to give a little practice before actually giving away the worksheet.

Read each sentence carefully. Identify the action verb by underlining it. 
If the verb has a direct object (receives the action), mark it as transitive (T).
If the verb does not have a direct object, mark it as intransitive (I)

Transitive or Intransitive Verbs

Objective: To practice transition words in an argumentative essay before students write their own.  Type: Cloze essay.  Solution included.  Practice tips: Teachers can choose to combine the word banks for all 6 paragraphs for more advanced students, or separate them out even further per paragraph for those who struggle.  In class, we also scrambled the paragraphs and had students work as a class to identify the introduction and conclusion, and put the body paragraphs in order.

Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well
