Long a vowel sound

This is a rhyming words exercise to help with pronunciation of vowel sounds and recognition of the  different spellings. there are 3 matching words (one blue, one green one red). Once the children (about age 8-12 but also used with adults) I have asked the children to choose one or two sets of rhyming words and write a short poem or limerick using the vocabulary. I write an example for them e.g kitty, city, pretty

Who lived in a huge city

When she could

she wanted to look good

She thought she was ever so pretty



and then the kids write their own.



Rhyming words - vowel sounds

It’s an exciting time when your child first begins to speak. Saying their first words is a major milestone. It paves the way to the development of speech and language and better communication between you and your child.

	In order for this communication to develop, your child needs to be able to say individual words to build up their vocabulary. It’s only once children have done this that they can begin to combine words together. This is where the real communication begins!

These are vowel sound cards with words to illustrate. Each letter is shown with long and short variants and includes a card for shwa . I printed each one on a different color of card stock. Geared for adult ESL, as there are no pictures.

It contains some basic vowel sounds in English to practice in different ways. 

I usually ask my groups to rap it, say it as poem or just read it.

Make sure to screen it, exagerate the sounds the first times for them to get it and adopt/adapt to your convenience!

A worksheet dealing with phonetics and some of the major difficulties my students usually have (maybe the same as yours). There are 7 exercises to differentiate vowel and consonant sounds, to differentiate z and s sounds an three exercises with the ending “ed” sound of regular verbs in the past. After the students do the exercises, they’ll find the transcriptions on the second page for auto-correction. The teacher may want to check it orally after their own correction. My own remake of the vowels sounds - inspired by jolly phonics



Read the words and point to the pictures emphasizing the vowels sounds a/e/i/u/o.



The children look at the picture box. Say the word box ask the children to listen out or the /o/ sound.

Point out that in the line of short vowels above the picture the /o/ has been circled.



The children look at the rest of the pictures and say the words for them circling the short vowel above. Also write down the words under neath the pictures. The last picture has 2 vowel sounds see if your children can pick them up!



Finally a word search containing 4 of each vowel sound to find.
