This worksheet can be done orally or by writing. It is meant for adults or high schoolers, level A2. The students have to tell if they would do a certain thing and why or why not.

A series of questions used to generate discussion among students.

Would you ever?

this includes several questions using would, and also some cards that can be cut out and handed out to students for them to read aloud and the rest of the group can respond giving suggestions by using would or should.

To suggest preference. Primary pupils write their sentences using would or wouldn't about birthday gifts they would or wouldn't like to receive on their birthday.

Grammar activity to contrast used to and would to talk about past states and habits. Students must fill in the sentences with the correct option. They should tell in which sentences both possibilities are correct.

These can often be confused, so a few examples to show the difference before doing the exercise.

USED TO or WOULD

Pre-Intermediate use of these two phrasal modals. Short grammar usage definitions and short exercises to practice. Clear guidance as regards theory. Comparison of these formal phrasal modals with easier or simpler synonyms.

HAD BETTER  - WOULD RATHER

Made for a lesson from Touchstone 3, Unit 8. The phrases need to be cut out and then distributed to the students. If they aren't familiar with the second conditional yet, the beginning of the answer "I would [infinitive] ..." could be written on the board. Can be used as an ice-breaker or as an introductory exercise.
