Up - Movie Scene - Simple Past Practice

deborafmir June 04, 2018

Task description & scene summary

Task description:
Simple past - Learners will answer questions about the video using the simple past form of the verbs. As a follow up activity, students could also write the story - a narrative - of Ellie and Carl based on what they understood from the video. A good way of practicing the past tenses (simple past, past continuous; when/while, etc.) in a meaningful way. The video can also be used as a prompt for oral practice. Students can tell the story they saw.
Scene summary:
Ellie and Carl's relation over time - a sequence of scenes with important moments in their lives - their wedding, their house, their work, their plans for the future, their dream trip, and how their lives progress in time.

Good movie and idea but there is an erreur with question 7. They( tried to save) money for their trip, but they (had to spend) it on other things is the correct answer (b). not (c). tried saving and had spending cannot be used in a sentence as had spending makes no sense and isn't used in the english language. You can use tried saving and had spent but not had spending. Thanks ! Its still a great clip!

Thanks for sharing this activity on a lovely video clip. Mind you, I'm quite sure the answer to question #7 should be "tried to save", not "saving" (because they found it hard, it's not that they wanted to see if it worked). Anyway, sts at this level are unlikely to know the difference between try +inf and ing, so perhaps it'd be easier to modify the options so that they are between present and past (correct or incorrect forms) as in the rest of the quiz.Once again, thanks!
