A lesson on Context Clues. Best used for reading exercises. The theme of the lesson is Sherlock Holmes, wherein students role play a detective in pursuit of mystery words in an attempt to search for meanings of difficult words. This lesson covers Reading and Vocabulary.  



You make this presentation work with your lessons the way you want and to the level you are teaching. You can add related worksheets of your choice at the end of the lesson or you could take the detective game to another level. Give me a clue is a game where you provide students with clues to guess the correct answers (Mine is about animals, but you can change to your own ideas). Students start of getting 5 to 6 clues, and every few answers the clues get less and less, until only one clue is given.

HOW TO PLAY - Divide the class into four teams. Taking turns they try to figure out each word by reading clues (each team can guess 5 words). Encourage students to make wild guesses - there is a solve button which can be pressed at any time to reveal the answer (but students should be sure first and encouraged to use more than one clue). The group scores according to how many clues they used. No points are awarded for wrong guesses.

This is a PowerPoint game I adapted (didn't create this myself) I used it for vocabulary (crops and condiments) You can change it as you like or even create a grammar version.

It involves a picture of the vocabulary hidden in the middle and 6 folders with hints in them. So I started the game by giving 6 points to each team and I reduced 1 point for each hint the team has revealed. I also added funny or ugly/scary pictures for some surprise effect and if the team gets a nice picture they get 1 point extra or I take away 1 point for an ugly picture. Students get to choose which folder to reveal. it doesn't have to be in order. I kept my clues simple as my kids are kind of beginners.

What's in the Box? Vocabulary game

HOW TO PLAY - Divide the class into teams. Each team starts with 20 points. Taking turns they try to figure out each word by reading clues. Encourage students to make wild guesses. They will score 5 points if they choose the right arrow. Though students may know the right word, that doesn’t mean they will choose the correct arrow (so this will engage students more in the game). All other arrows subtract (from 1 to 3 points) from their initial score. Should they fail their attempt, move to the next group (they should again read the clues and say the word out loud).
