This is a set of exercises to practise the affirmative, the negative and interrogative forms of some irregular and regular verbs. I insist mainly on irregular verbs. I previously gave the students a list of these verbs, which they have to know by heart.

In this worksheet you will find four exercises to practise/review tenses in the past: past simple and continuous, past perfect and present perfect. The students have to fill in the gaps with the correct tense. The key to the exercises is included. I hope it is useful.

Past simple or continuous; past perfect & present perfect

This test aims at revising the use of the simple past of regular and irregular verbs with a reading comprehension, grammar exercises. It is an extremely useful resource to assess the use of the past in al forms.

This word doc contains two exercises that can allow SS to practice more "used to". it enables SS to create questions asking people about things they use to do in the past and that they no longer do. SS will not just practice the rules, but also to identify the mistakes in the paragraph (exercise B) and correct them; this will help them to develop critical thinking skills.

A gap fill exercise about lockdown suitable for adults and older students. Students select the correct verb from the box and change it to the past simple. There is a video which talks about lockdown and covers the basics about the past simple for the exercise using the same verbs.

This is a summary of all past tenses in English, how and when to use it with different examples. It can be used at the end of a grammar chapter on past tenses. More examples can be given.

Past tenses : all-in-one

This game is for beginner students to practice Past Simple Questions. Through repetition students will memorize the question structure better and will have more fun practicing it than by writing.

Start with a couple of questions on the whiteboard (Did you go to the gym? Did you eat lunch at 12? Did you write a letter?...) and elicit the basic question structure (Did + Subject + Verb + Object) (please note you don't tell the students the structure - they will manage to figure it our by themselves from the examples).

Then, erase some words in those questions to elicit the Wh- question words (Where did you go? When did you eat lunch? What did you write? Why...? How..?).

After that, look at this handout (the first page) and elicit the full questions on the left.

If you work with one or two students, they will ask you the questions and you'll only answer with the words in the tiles that are dark grey on the second page. As you do, the student must draw in the same tiles on their handouts.

Continue this with the rest of the questions, and then the students must tell you what picture they got.



If you're working with a group of students, first do the aforementioned and then give them some time to make up their own picture and proceed with their partner.
