It is the typical "odd one out" exercise but with homophone words. Students have to identify the ODD word in the group and write its homophone on the right side.

I had a lot of fun writing these homophone sentences. I hope your students enjoy the worksheet too.



I've found that students don't always realise that the words are pronounced the same - I make them read out the sentences to get the idea into their heads that the pronunciation really is identical.



NB. In a few cases they are only homophones in British English.

This worksheet consists of some grammar explanation and four different exercises dealing with English homonyms (homographs and homophones). Key is provided on page 2.

Homonyms (exercises) 1

Though little readers should enjoy filling in the blanks the attached worksheet, lesson and KEY is for the more advanced students. My example is;

I could see the sea from the hotel. (sea, see)

Homophones Homographs & Synonyms

In this worksheet, students have to link 24 adjectives with their  synonyms of "very sth" (for example, "starving" is a synonym of "very hungry").

In the second exercise, they have to put this new vocabulary into practice by completing sentences with the same synonyms of the first exercise.

Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets
