A selection of English ESL must or mustn't printables

This is an idea I took from an FCE coursebook when I lost the original. It involves two groups of students - one group owns a house with spare rooms and the other group is looking for a place to live. 

The first group must come up with rules (You must not smoke; Parties are allowed; You needn't cook for everyone) etc. while the other group thinks of questions to ask when they meet (Can we smoke? Are we allowed pets? etc.)



Then they meet and chaos ensues while they argue over rules, and ultimately, decide whether they would live together.

I found that many of my students get confused with the grammar rules for the usage for "Have to, Must, Mustn’t, Don’t Have To, Needn’t Have, Didn’t Need To" so I put together a simplified version, intended as a handout. Exercises are plenty but when it comes to the grammar rules, the students usually give up. I tried to keep it as simple as possible.

It is a dice/cube that will help you practise the "musn't" construction with your students. It consists of pictures only - it is aimed at practising speaking. DIY.

An activity to help students learn and practise modal verbs and listening skills.



Learners complete the worksheet by listening to the songs and filling in the gaps and then self-checking their answers.



13 songs are featured in the worksheet with at least one modal verb in each song. The list of songs can be found in the video description. A number of songs in the video also feature the present perfect tense which can be pointed out to learners.



The activity can be made more difficult or easier for learners by adding / removing gaps in the song lyrics.

Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
