Paul's daily routine

This is a typical snakes and ladders boardgame with vocabulary about daily routine, household chores and free time activities.

Students have to make a sentence with the vocabulary on the square they land on. I'm uploading the board in parts because of the size of the file. 

If you want to make the game more challenging you will also find:

- a subject pronoun dice. Students have to make a sentence not only with the vocabulary provided but also with the pronoun they get.

- A dice that tells them whether they have to make an affirmative sentence, negative, yes/no question or information question.

I created another version of the classic Guess Who boardgame for ESL learners with characters that I made using the avatar creator tool at http://avachara.com . You will find a bunch of sample questions and gameplaying phrases on the 2nd page of the printable.

You can use this worksheet in your ESL/EFL classes to practice body parts, clothes, (garments and accessories), and asking closed (Yes/No) questions in a fun way. 



I recommend using this ESL printable worksheet up to pre-intermediate level, as the game centers around asking simple questions and giving short answers in the Present Simple tense using the auxiliary verb 'have', and the Present Continuous tense using the verb "wear".



Playing this game is a proven way of getting your students involved in speaking English.





GUESS WHO GAMEPLAYING GUIDE



1. Pair students up.



2. Ask who knows the game.



3. Explain the point of the game: they will have to guess each other's mystery person quicker than their partner. 



4. Explain the rules. 



A) They may only ask 'YES' or ‘NO’ questions during the game (and of course, answer 'YES' or 'NO'). 



B) If a certain detail is not clearly visible from the picture or leaves room for various interpretations, your pupils may respond by "I can't tell" or "It's not possible to tell". Next, it's the other pupils's turn.



c) Turn by turn, students narrow down their list of possible mystery persons until they feel ready to confidently make a guess. Usually this happens when one has been ruled out of the last 2 people that remain. If they get the person wrong, their partner wins.



5. Hand out the following to every pair:



A) One copy of the boardgame per pair. 



B) One magic marker per pair.



C) One transparent plastic foil per pair. Tell students that they are supposed to place the foil over the boardgame and use the foil to cross the characters who they have ruled out using an erasable magic marker. How does this work in practice? For example, "Is your person wearing a hat?" If the answer is 'Yes', then they cross out all the characters that are NOT wearing a hat. If the answer is 'No', they cross out all the characters that are wearing a hat.



6. Before (and throughout) the game remind students to use auxiliary verbs in their responses, not just a simple Yes or No, e.g. "Yes, he or she is/does", "No, he or she isn't/doesn't" (using the form "he or she" up to the point when the gender of the mystery character has been revealed in order to keep this info hidden). Once the gender is revealed, they can start using the specific gender in their responses, e.g. "Yes, he is", "Yes, he does", "No, he isn't", No, he doesn't". 



You can, however, also choose to make it a rule and not allow asking about the gender. This way the game will last longer and result in more questions.





Guess Who with 25 characters

The main objective is to refresh Present Simple and Present Continuous.

Instructions:

At least 2 players are needed, a coin and two pawns. 

One player has to toss a coin and say the word. If the answer given is correct, the player will move one space ahead. If he/she doesn't know the answer, he/she won't move or will move one space behind.

Fun Listening Activity for people new to English who are learning verbs and improving their vocabulary with the help of Moana. I teach Elementary so I focused on Present Simple for the 3rd person for the students to practice spelling correctly. The doc contains other activities for listening such as fill in the gaps with the correct words.

How Far I'll Go (Moana) 

This is an optional dice that students can use when playing with DAILY ROUTINE SNAKES AND LADDERS that I have also uploaded.

This dice indicates if the student has to make an affirmative sentence, a negative one, or a question. They should also include the vocabulary provided in the boardgame. Or you may also use the dice with a set of flashcards with action verbs.

DAILY ROUTINE SNAKES AND LADDERS DICE

This fully editable worsheet serves as training practice on jobs. First students need to unscramble the words. Then they have to match them with the sentences. The idea is for students not only to learn/practise writing these words, but also to use them in sentences and then write their own job descriptions (they can even write descriptions for others to guess). Key and greyscale are included.

Spelling practice for the difficult third person singular of the present simple tense- affirmative. Reinforcement may make the changes easier to remember. The forgotten "s" is a bane for teachers. Perhaps this chart will make learning somewhat easier.

Present Simple 3rd Person Singular Grammar Guide and Practice

I created this group activity as a game for students to understand the importance of word order in English at the same time they have fun. You will find:

- 2 boards (you will need one board per student)

- 75 cards (15 subject cards, 15 verb cards, 15 object cards, 15 places cards and 15 time expressions cards) One copy is enough for a group of 5 students.

- and a spinner (you will need a paper clip and a pencil. Press the pencil tip through the paper clip and onto the centre of the spinner circle. With the other hand flick the paper clip like a spinner).

HOW TO PLAY:

Place all the cards on the table so that students can see the pictures. Students take turns flicking the paper clip spinner. They take the cards according to the instructions in the spinner and place them on their boards. The first player who completes the three sentences has to read out loud his/her sentences saying the correct form of the verb in the simple present. If the player does so ok, then he/she is the winner.

As a follow up activity you may ask them to read their sentences and write them down on their notebooks.
