A selection of English ESL questions: wh questions (open-ended questions) printables

A mingling/conversation activity to practise asking Wh- questions (What/Where/Why/Who/Which/When/How). First, students write the correct Wh- question word in the spaces. Then, they walk around the class asking different classmates the questions, with follow-up questions to find out more about what their classmates said. A good wrap-up is to go around the class and have each student share the most interesting thing they learned about their classmates. Enjoy!

This worksheet has been created in order to motivate my students to feedback some grammar topics and improve writing little by little.

 I also considered the FAMOUS FOOTBALLERS because this year is going to have the WORLD CUP 2018 in Russia and my country PERU has qualified. So my students do not stop talking about soccer.

This worksheet is focused on making questions about the underlined information. The tenses used are Present Simple, Present Continuous, Past Simple and Past Continuous. You can use it as a revision worksheet.

Asking questions

Students must write where questions and answers using the provided pictures. They must use the correct pronouns. 

Where are they?

This worksheet practices questions. The first exercise is about the difference between who and which. The students read the questions and find the correct picture.

Then they have to make their own questions about the pictures using who or which. In the third exercise they have to complete the sentences with different question words.

Making questions

Some personal questions that will help our students in order to improve the writing skill. 

It is an easy way to evaluate if our students are improving or not once we have introduced the wh-questions.

Wh- questions. Writing Production

This activity is good to use with new groups of students but goes with "old" groups as well. Students write down five things (keywords)  about themselves. They pair up and start asking questions to find out why their partner wrote the keywords he did. Later they inform the rest of the group what they learnt about their partner.

Five Things About Me

The objective is to have all the WH Question Words and their combinations in one place. The examples are given, but own ones can be also written. It is a grammar guide, but it can be also used for reviewing of WH Questions at different levels. 

There is also a short quiz with answers. Cards can be made and used in a pair or group work.
