Can / Can't Abilities

Hello everyone! I've written a text about monkeys. The source of the text is wikipedia and chimpanzees called Washoe and Koko. I needed to generalize the knowledge in order to lower the level of the text. It is for my 4th and 5th grade students. It focuses on teaching some new words and revising can/can't , have got/ has got and present simple tense. Questions are mainly yes or no questions. Hope it will be useful to you :)

The following board game will help your students (beginner level) practise questions and short answers with Can ot Can't. They may work in pairs or groups. Hope they like it!

CAN, CAN´T SHORT ANSWERS + ANIMALS

This is a very simple game with a dice and cards. Place all the cards face down. Children throw the dice in turns. They call out the part of the body they get. Then they they pick up a card and make a sentence with can or can't and the corresponding sense. Eg: (Dice: Nose. Card: Flowers.) They should say: "Nose. I can smell flowers". In that case, they get the card. But if when throwing the dice, they get "ear", the sentence should be: "I can't hear flowers". In that case, they have to leave the card on the table face down again. The student who gets more cards wins. ("My 5 senses" picture on the dice is like a wild card, they can choose the part of the body they want) You can also ask your students to describe the pictures using: soft, hard, wet, hot and cold.

Your students have to answer "Can you?" questions. I tried to write questions that are a little bit out of the ordinary, e.g. Can you teach a monkey to tell the time?, Can you rap?, etc. First, they answer with a short “Yes, I can” or “Yes, I can.” Then they tell their partner a bit more, e.g. “I can dance, but in my own style.” See sample answers for each question on Page 2.
