A selection of English ESL printables with intermediate (b1)

Print off and cut up one set of cards per group. Put the students in groups of 2-4. Students deal the cards evenly between group members. Each player must only look at their top card. Decide which player will go first. Play can happen in two ways:

Straight game - Player chooses an attribute of their animal that they think will beat their group mates. Read out the number. Other players read out their numbers for corresponding attribute. The player with the highest number gets one point. This player can choose the attribute on the next turn. Players can then discuss and compare the attributes of each animal using comparative and superlatives.

Discussion - Each player names their animal and the group discusses which attributes they think will be strongest for each animal. Then the player whose turn it is must make their decision on which attribute to choose. This method may involve more use of language and practice of comparatives and superlatives. The highest number gets one point as above.

Remember this is also a QR code activity, so you could save yourself the time and paper and have them do it on their smartphones. Visit english-able.com for QR codes and a lot more like this.

Animal Top Trumps

This worksheet will allow you to test your students´ knowledge of prepositional phrases with FOR. They will have to complete 23 sentences with the correct prepositional phrase (for fear of, for luck, for instance, for good, etc...) chosen from a list. Answer sheet provided. Enjoy !!

This is a worksheet you can work with your intermediate level students. The exercises include all the conditionals and you have the answers to. I hope you find it useful 

Conditionals Quiz

This is an a speaking and listening activity to accompany the song Cover me in Sunshine by Pink.

The activity has two stages.

Stage 1, Students are given the paper with either the 1st or second column filled. They work impairs and describe the words to each other and fill in the empty column. Tell them to ignore the narrow columns for the time being.

Stage 2. Tell the students that some of the words come from a song. Play the song (with video if you like) and students have to use the narrow columns to tick off the words which they hear in the song.

The words not in the song are all from the Cambridge Flyers vocabulary list but I have used the activity with higher levels too and the set their own level with the way they described the words,

It's a very simple guide to help intermediate or lower intermediate students to describe objects, talking about their shape,colour, material and using relatives to describe what they are used for. It is necessary to brainstorm  some vocabulary about the typical presents people receive at Xmas. You can even show some pics taken from internet.

Each Tense statement is divided into 4 groups as well i.e. i) the positive statement, ii) the negative statement, iii) the positive question, iv) the negative question



Please note that  negative questions are rarely mentioned in most grammar books.
