This is a writing and reading worksheet for ESL beginners. Writing prompts are provided, so the students will have an easy time to complete the worksheet with less supervision from the teacher.

Describing your hometown

Nine speaking cards to talk about hometowns. Eight of them are completed with fantasy names, the ninth one is for students own city/town/village.

Students have to complete the song lyrics as they listen to the youtube video of hometown. Then, they will have to match words from the song to their meanings. The main aim of this activity is to expand their vocabulary and to train their hear to identify words in english and write them properly.

HOLY NIGHT - BY HOMETOWN

This is a worksheet about tourism in the student's hometown where they have to think about things to do with an international friend of theirs who is coming to visit. Lead-in phrases are provided for four activities in both summer and winter (because at least here in the Nordics the activities you can do vary a lot in the summer and winter). I used this with my 15-year-old students, who had been studying English for six years, when we were discussing tourism in Finland so that they would have to think about their hometown from the perspective of a tourist guide. I used a version of the worksheet where I wrote the name of the town where I was teaching instead of "your hometown" and provided the link to the town's tourism website down below after "Need tips?".

This is a speaking activity I made for a conversation class. I tried to covered as many topics as possible. On the second page there are a couple of exercises to practice places in town and prepositions, and also giving directions. There is a map of our town, we used it only as orientation, obviously we know where the places are, so you can replace it with the map of your town, with a generic one, or you can even mark some random places in mine :). This activity is designed to go along with lessons about hometowns or cities.


Class listen to Frank Turner's song "Wessex Boy", you can easily find the official music video on Frank Turner's YouTube Channel. Have them read through the first sheet as they listen.


Show class the Mad-Libs sheet and have them fill in the gaps themselves about their own hometown. There are no "correct" answers, as it's based on student's own answers. But make sure their grammar and answers make sense.


If you're a particularly cruel teacher you can get the students to sing their own version in front of the rest of the class.

Hometown Warm-Up with Frank Turner's Wessex Boy

 Read the text an work with the vocabulary it appears. The text can serve as a model for students to write a composition. 

Describing your city using present simple sentences and it can be considered as a CLIL activity. Reading comprehension. Model for writing a composition of their hometown.

Students complete and write a letter to an English-speaking friend who is coming to visit them in their hometown. They have to tell this friend about the best time to come, what to see, the food and the nightlife, as well as give them advice about the kind of clothes to bring for the holiday.

The beginnings of the paragraphs have already been written for them, but they have to finish them, including all the necessary information.
